Pak Wismoyo was a commander who had a significant influence on me personally. His teachings had a lasting impact on me. He always emphasized to his men the importance of thinking good, doing good, and speaking well. He believed that one should never have negative thoughts about others. This particular teaching has always stayed with me. I believe that the values he instilled are very beneficial and in line with Indonesian and TNI culture.
He often said that brave men must be happy. He also believed that a leader should boost the morale of his men through activities such as singing, sports, and group activities as they are the ones who carry out their commander’s orders. I first met Pak Wismoyo Arismunandar when I joined KOPASSANDHA. At that time, he served as the Deputy Assistant for Security (Waaspam) of KOPASSANDHA while I was a Second Lieutenant. I later found out that he was Pak Harto’s brother-in-law, as his wife was the younger sister of Ibu Tien Suharto.
Initially, I wasn’t very close to him, but in 1978, he became our Commander in KOPASSANDHA Group 1. I was the Commander of Company 112 at that time, so I began to get to know Pak Wismoyo better. His motto of ‘Think good, do good, and speak well’ had a profound impact on me personally. He always emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive attitude and good humor. He encouraged us to be spirited and enthusiastic. He believed in creating a happy and lively atmosphere to keep his troops motivated.
Pak Wismoyo always recommended that a leader should be present with his men, participate in their activities, and make an effort to enhance the bond between them. He believed that a leader should not only give commands but also be actively involved in the group’s activities. He often participated in singing, dancing, and other activities with his men. Despite challenges, he always remained composed and forgiving, giving second chances to those who made mistakes.
He also emphasized the importance of discipline, loyalty, and honor. He taught us not to speak ill of others and to avoid arrogance. Pak Wismoyo led by example, even participating in training exercises despite his injuries. He was a sports enthusiast and skilled in marksmanship. He encouraged me to excel in marksmanship, especially as a member of the Infantry Corps.
One particular incident that left a lasting impression on me was when Pak Wismoyo prepared me for my first operation as a Company Commander. He emphasized the importance of being close to God as a commander responsible for the lives of his soldiers. His guidance and teachings were invaluable, and I continue to apply them in my leadership roles.
