Proven: Free Nutritious Meals Boost Kids’ Concentration

The Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) Program has been proven to have a positive impact on children’s concentration levels, as evidenced by short-term memory tests. This enhancement is expected to help maintain students’ motivation to learn in the long run.

Research conducted in Aceh showed that students who received Free Nutritious Meals exhibited improved concentration, which is a promising development that can lead to better academic performance and increased motivation to continue learning. A study by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) also indicated that the MBG program had a similar effect on students’ learning focus and cognitive abilities in areas like Bogor and Papua, especially for those who skipped breakfast. A case study at State Vocational School 6 (SMK Negeri 6) in Medan demonstrated that MBG significantly boosted students’ attendance and concentration levels in class.

Concentration is closely tied to attention and the brain’s ability to process stimuli, making it a crucial cognitive function during a child’s formative years. Factors that can influence concentration include learning motivation, nutritional intake, psychological well-being, and physiological conditions like sleep quality, noise levels, lighting, temperature, and the learning environment’s design.

Nutrition plays a significant role in concentration, with key nutrients like protein, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids being essential for brain development and cognitive function, particularly memory. Ikeu Tanziha, an Expert Council Member of the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), emphasized the importance of adequate nutritional intake, especially proteins, iron, and omega-3, for brain function and memory.

The MBG Program aims to address children’s nutritional requirements not only for physical growth but also to enhance their cognitive potential and intelligence. However, challenges such as unhealthy eating habits among children and limited access to nutritious food in certain regions need to be addressed. It is crucial to support the successful implementation of the Free Nutritious Meals Program to ensure lasting benefits for future generations and society as a whole.
