Free School Health Checks: Investing in Our Nation’s Future

The Indonesian government recently introduced the Free Health Check Program (CKG) for students nationwide to promote early detection of physical and mental health issues among school-aged children. This initiative, led by President Prabowo Subianto’s Quick Win agenda, aims to cultivate a healthier and more resilient generation. Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin emphasized that the program is a crucial investment in the country’s future, beyond just a healthcare intervention. Screenings under the program include height and weight measurements, dental and vision checks, and mental health assessments, with involvement from teachers and parents in promoting healthy living. The collaboration of local governments, schools, and ministries, particularly the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, has been instrumental in making CKG a reality. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy to develop world-class human capital, complementing other programs such as Free Nutritious Meals and innovative educational initiatives like Sekolah Rakyat and Sekolah Garuda. West Java Vice Governor Erwan Setiawan highlighted the focus on addressing health issues among the province’s 8.6 million students, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures and continued monitoring. Bandung Mayor Muhammad Farhan stressed the need for multi-agency collaboration to meet Minimum Service Standards, especially in child health, by leveraging data from various departments. The rollout of CKG to thousands of schools in Indonesia, particularly underserved areas, reflects the government’s commitment to nurturing a healthy and thriving youth population crucial for the nation’s future.
