President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship programs, including Free Nutritious Meals (Makan Bergizi Gratis / MBG), People’s School (Sekolah Rakyat), and the Merah Putih Village/Urban Cooperatives (Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih / Kopdes), are viewed as accelerators for poverty eradication. These initiatives offer the potential to create numerous job opportunities and enhance economic independence, making them akin to “express lanes” for progress. Head of the Poverty Eradication Acceleration Agency (BP Taskin), Budiman Sudjatmiko, emphasized that the government’s aim goes beyond poverty reduction, focusing on empowering individuals for economic self-reliance.
Using a football analogy, Budiman explained that the poor are the players, and the President’s goal is to equip them with skills, knowledge, proper nutrition, and economic opportunities. The government’s role is to facilitate a seamless transition towards poverty eradication, similar to scoring a goal in a soccer game. The Sekolah Rakyat program, based on boarding schools, aims to break the cycle of poverty, while MBG and Kopdes Merah Putih benefit entire communities by creating job opportunities and stimulating economic growth.
Deputy Head of BP Taskin, Nanik S. Deyang, highlighted the tangible hope these programs offer to impoverished households. Boarding schools provide a conducive environment for children to dream big, while MBG’s operations benefit local producers and businesses. For instance, small-scale tofu-and-tempeh factories have expanded their workforce due to supplying MBG kitchens, and similar growth has been observed in vegetable and poultry trading businesses.
Beyond the direct impact of MBG, Nanik pointed out the significance of Kopdes Merah Putih in streamlining supply chains and reducing costs for consumers. By eliminating middlemen, Kopdes ensures that essential items like 3-kilogram LPG cylinders are available at fair prices, and farmers can access affordable fertilizers without intermediaries. Additionally, Kopdes provides access to affordable credit, liberating individuals from exploitative lenders and offering more favorable terms compared to traditional banking institutions.
